Pure EleganceDORA

Thirty two year old welfare mother of 8, with an out-of-work husband, has been supported in “de junking” her home several times over the years. She has no friends.

She crawled out from under the mountain of clothing on her bed. Warmth and softness provided hope that somehow, someday the world could work for her. She was thankful for people who were generous to her and her family.
Rotting teeth, mental despair, and associated illnesses didn’t stop her. She knew the baby needed tending and the kids had to go to school. If she could step over the clutter and keep moving, maybe her kids could live a fuller life than she had. Every year she had so much faith to ask for help. When teams of a dozen or more showed up there was so much to do that the job never actually got complete. At the end of the day she was left only with a few hours of hope.

Then the cycle of chaos and disorder started again and her home once again looked and felt like a tornado had hit it. Dora and her family were judged by others and lived in virtual isolation. Suddenly she heard about an unusual course in cleaning. The ideas were so simple and powerful that she thought it could really help her. She took the course and courageously let in support.

On day one, before the team even began, her husband was offered a job, a team of 30 volunteers showed up to beautify and clean. The mass cleaned out was so great three 15 feet long dumpsters were filled to the brim. Her children took pride in their rooms and she had other rooms in the house that radiated order and beauty.

When finished, team members were so inspired they kept going in their own homes. A team member found a way for her to get her teeth and mouth repaired at no cost. Her energy and enthusiasm for living grew as she volunteered to clean other people’s homes.

Dora took her kids with her and they cleaned too. She became a cornerstone of the widening program developing deep and loving friendships along the way. The family eventually went off welfare and bought their own home – a dream they never thought possible before this training.

MARY

ideasWelfare mother caught in overwhelming despair, with an addicted husband and a small child.

Mary always knew her daughter was a gem. She just didn’t know how to uncover that gem. Like most others in her neighborhood, she was destitute and surviving from day to day on welfare. Mary was talented and had even been a journalist. Her marriage to a drug addicted husband, the birth of their daughter and the subsequent divorce left her overwhelmed.

Mary heard our radio talk show host discussing a new concept with a caller about how living a life organized by beauty could totally transform one’s life. The host talked about a revolutionary values clarification process that involved four principles. She called in and registered for the program.

After Mary and her daughter, Sara, went through the Seminar, they went home and surveyed their home. It was a mess. Where to start? Mary remembered the big rocking chair in Sara’s room. She suggested they go to her room.

“It feels so good to have mommy rocking me,” Sara thought. As she curled up on her mom’s lap as only as a six-year-old girl could. Mom asked a strange question, “Sara, how does this room make you feel?” Sara looked over all the stuff in her room and said, “It makes me feel like a witch.”

She suggested they take everything out of the room except the rocker. Once everything was out, they cleaned the room impeccably. Again they sat and rocked together. Mary asked, “Sara, how do you feel now?” Sara replied, “Mommy, I feel like a princess.”

They decided to only put back those items in the room that made the feeling of princess grow ever stronger. Over time, they continued choosing Radiating Points, cleaning organizing and designing spaces in their home. Every step produced a greater sense of worth and power.

Both wanted to share what they had learned. They joined other volunteers who had taken the class to help other families in their homes. It was wonderful to be with an unstoppable 6 year old girl as she taught neighborhood children to become princes and princesses.

As Mary drew upon the power being generated in her home, opportunities came to her to begin writing, and she re started her career as a journalist successfully, eventually moving off welfare.

KAREN

Welfare, food stamps, chaos and gangs ruled this woman’s life.

Life was horrible. Three boys, including her 11-year old, had earlier been forced into the deadly local Latino gangs. Her husband was in prison. Welfare, food stamps, chaos and fear ran her life. She just knew that her sons would not live long in the gangs.

community_teamworkKaren heard the radio show about a revolutionary cleaning process. She called and registered for the class.

After class Karen could not imagine having a team of people come into her home. Her home was such a mess that she was too embarrassed to ask for a team. She volunteered to help clean other’s homes. While volunteering, she realized that she could clean up her own life. She knew she had very little communication or control with her sons. She struck a deal with them. They didn’t have to do anything around the house except have dinner with her each night. They agreed.

She meticulously placed her best china on the table – the china her grandmother had given her – the china she had always saved for the company that never came. She prepared delicious dinners – dinners that reflected the beauty she had inside. From this simple stage, she proposed that the conversations at dinner be peaceful. Dinner became the only time that the family had peace and safety. Every time the boys left home they literally stepped into a gang world that could kill them.

Transformation was very rapid. A couple of weeks after she started the dinners, her 11 year old son knocked a gun out of the hand of one of the gang members who was going to kill a 5 year old child. The oldest boy moved in with his grandmother. His school grades went from failing to A’s and B’s. The boys came out of the gangs and reclaimed their family.

MEG

It’s never too late.

Meg was 78 years old when she heard of the program. She called and arranged to have two people over to her house. They cleaned two rooms and a small bathroom. Meg wrote that the cleaning was so inspiring that the rooms became the focal point of her home:

“Cleaning was never done by me. My husband and children always took care of it. I would never have dreamed I would be cleaning. I am now determined that every single shelf, every closet, every drawer not only in my home, but in my husband’s work shop and storage room is going to be sparkling clean and well organized. Now I get a real rush of pride in my surroundings no matter which direction I look…We spend every Friday deep cleaning our room together. We make it fun. The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement. I am delighted.”
